Know the envelope size first

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when designing your wedding invitation is having them completely done and ready to send out and not having an envelope to send them in! You can waste a lot of time searching for an envelope that may not even exist to fit your invitations in. So choose the mailing envelope before you start designing your invitation to ensure you have the proper size envelopes to send your invitation in. While the invitation can be resized to fit the envelopes, the envelopes can’t be resized to fit the invitations. Below you will find the most common envelope sizes which will help you determine standard wedding invitation size you should do with.

NAME

SIZE

A-1 (4 BAR)

3 5/8” X 5 1/8”

A-2

4 3/8” X 5 3/4”

A-6

4 3/8” X 6 1/2”

A-7

A-9

5 3/4" X 8 3/4"

Inner and Outer Envelopes: Many couples choose to send invitation inside an envelope and then mail this inside another envelope. This can ensure the inner envelope stays clean throughout the shipping and mailing process, which can be more of a welcome to those who want it as a keepsake. However, you can also just mail the invitation inside one envelope, which is more budget friendly.

It is recommended that the inside envelope is an A6 size and the outside envelope is usually an A7 size. If you are choosing to forgo the inner envelop, most couples have used an A 6, 7 or 9 envelope size. When it comes to the flaps on the envelope, you can choose an Announcement flap which is the square design, or the Baronial flap which are the pointed designs.

The Response Envelopes: Response envelopes are convenient for your guests to send back their RSVPs in. The standard wedding invitation size for response envelopes tend to be A1 or A2 size.

Choosing a standard wedding invitation

Once you have chosen your envelope size, you can move onto choosing the invitation size. While you can consider any size that will fit within the envelope, most traditional invitation stay in the 4 1/2” X 6 1/4" rectangular shape. While rectangular is the traditional shape, you can absolutely look at other shapes from circular to square. You should be aware, however, that the more you steer away from the traditional and standard wedding invitation size, the more the postage could be, so you want to be mindful of large and bulky invitations which will cost more to mail.
